The amazing AMASE programme – and five things you should know about it

Studying abroad is one of the best experiences ever, and the AMASE program (Master in Advanced Materials Science and Engineering) is on another level. You can still apply for the intake 2022/2023, and thank me later 😉. But, wait! What is AMASE?

AMASE is a double degree master`s programme that is part of the European School of Materials (EUSMAT). The team offers international education and research in the field of materials science by promoting and coordinating international study programmes, conferences, and exchanges in order to create a worldwide network of partnerships with universities, industry and institutions. And the best part is that they support mobility with different types of scholarships or contributions.

This year is the first time that Montanuniversität Leoben participates in the programme, coordinated by Prof. Raul Bermejo. So now, our university offers more options for Austrians and foreigners! Now that we are on the same page, we can go deeper into this AMASE-ing master!

1) Great Support

As an international student, you will need a lot of guidance before and after your arrival. EUSMAT team is always available to answer all your questions really fast (I am not lying, I am impressed that even when they have to coordinate a lot of activities, they always reply to emails the same day or just one day after).

Since they have years of experience, all the requirements for visas will be ready in time, and if there is a challenging situation, the staff will solve it, for sure. So as an AMASE student, you will be 100 % supported along the journey.

2) Language and cultural versatility

You can choose two universities from six countries: Germany, Sweden, France, Spain, Austria, and Italy. A special feature of AMASE is that the consortium uses four languages: English, German, French and Spanish. For applying, you only need to speak one of them during the first year. In the meanwhile, students have to learn the second language to be ready for the second year.
It might appear challenging, but it has advantages: Speaking the language allows you to be involved in the culture and understand it better. Moreover, it increases your chances when applying for jobs in the host country. Professional and personal growth is  guaranteed.

3) You will never be alone!

The distribution of students is carried out strategically among all the universities. Therefore, every participant will find another AMASE peer to help each other during the first days. Eventually, all of us will meet more people from other programs and levels. This is super cool because you will share culture and knowledge. In addition, each destination organises different activities to help new students to socialise and there are a bunch of international students that will be more than happy to share a coffee or a party!

4) Technical and scientific versatility

If you are familiar with materials science, you already know that this is such a huge branch. And guess what!? They offer five tracks, of which participants choose one for specialization. The options are the following:

  • Advanced metallic materials (my favorite)
  • Polymers and composites
  • Smart surfaces and functional materials
  • Advanced processing technologies
  • Bio / Nano materials

5) Traveling opportunities

This is not exclusive from AMASE, but come on! I have to mention it. When living and studying in Europe, traveling is a must! Take the chance to visit different cities and landmarks that will take your breath away more than once. Have you heard about a program more complete than AMASE? I bet you not!
